How long have you been a proposal manager/specialist/ writer?

On and off, I have been a proposal specialist since the mid 1990’s.

How did you become involved with proposals?

I worked in not-for-profit, where grant writing was a huge skill set and side item to my "day job". This evolved into roles that focused solely on proposal development.

Do you work in a "corporate office" or "home office" environment?

Until recently, I worked in a corporate office environment, but have now moved to a national role that works from home.

What do you like best about working in your current environment?

Flexibility to adjust to the time needs of my internal clients. I can work when they need to work.

What do you like least about working in your current environment?

I think I am losing social skills... :)

What do you feel is the most challenging aspect of your job?

I support a professional services firm that proposes on a very wide spectrum of work. I have to be able to quickly understand the essence of the work we are proposing, what it means to our clients and how it impacts their business. This means I have to have a very broad understanding of all sectors, the various infrastructures within a business environment, and constant update on the different issues and trends that affect all of this.

What shortcuts or helpful best practices about working with proposal teams could you share?

That’s a tough question to answer – I have lots of experience, both tactical and strategic. I could probably offer more about how to kick off the process, and working with ever changing teams.

Why/when did you join APMP?

I was a member in the past and loved the thought leadership that was available, but I wasn’t 100% focused on proposal management. In addition to having access to a community that "gets it", I am also interested in achieving certification.

What is your method for successfully working with your proposal teams?

Communication, understand the expectations and issues at stake, communication, ensure concrete goals and objectives are in place and communication….it is a very set process, but if I were to only focus on one aspect of my role, it is to be the communication hub and ensure everyone is on the same page towards the same final objective.

Which type of proposals do you do most? Commercial, government or other?
