Questions Courtney's Answers
How long have you been a proposal manager/specialist/ writer? 10 years.
How did you become involved with proposals? I was working in our manufacturing mill and I wanted to do something more so I applied for a job managing proposals. Although I didn’t know very much about it at the time, luckily someone gave me a chance on me and it turned out to be a very good fit for me.
Do you work in a "corporate office" or "home office" environment? Corporate Office.
What do you like best about working in your current environment? I love being able to communicate with people from all different departments within our company and learning everything that makes our company successful. Being in this position has given me the opportunity to do this every day.
What do you like least? When submitting bids/proposals online, I could do without all of the technical glitches that come along right before you are ready to hit the submit button.
What do you feel is the most challenging aspect of your job? Ensuring that the proposals I’m sending out will provide the best solution to our customer as my work is speaking on behalf of our company.
What shortcuts or helpful best practices about working with proposal teams could you share? We realize that we will always need to change and grow in order to stay successful so we continuously strive to find new ways to help our company stand out from our competition. We look for ways to improve the look of our proposals, we search for training classes we can take to improve our skills, we search for any new software or products that can take our proposals to the next level and we encourage new ideas or ways of thinking from all of our team members. We also realize that we can learn from past mistakes and use those lessons to make us better proposal managers in the future.
Why/when did you join APMP? I attended a class on the benefits of becoming an APMP member. There was a lot I didn’t know before taking this class. I did not realize that there was an association for proposal managers, which offered resources and certification. I’m ready to take my career to the next level and I believe that APMP can help me do so.
What is your method for successfully working with your proposal teams? Communication is key. As the proposal manager, I am in charge of ensuring that everyone on the specific proposal team has the information and details they need as soon as possible after receiving a request for proposal. Then, throughout the entire process, it is my job to continue to communicate effectively with the proposal team so that all necessary information is obtained and added into the final proposal in a timely manner.
Which type of proposals do you do most? Commercial, government or other? Our company does more commercial proposals than any other.
