How long have you been a proposal manager/specialist/ writer? I have been a proposal coordinator for almost four years.
How did you become involved with proposals? I applied for my current position to get my foot in the door in our Sales and Marketing Division and found that I love proposals.
Do you work in a "corporate office" or "home office" environment? I work in a corporate office environment.
What do you like best about working in your current environment? I love the fast paced atmosphere and how things never get boring while working RFPs.
What do you like least? The thing I like the least about my position in the lack of work/life balance during our busy season.
What do you feel is the most challenging aspect of your job? I feel the most challenging aspect of my job is the intense pressure for perfect RFP responses. When we are given critical information, such as financials, in the “final hours” before the deadline this removes time needed for appropriate levels of review, rushes production, etc.
What shortcuts or helpful best practices about working with proposal teams could you share? I think that organization is an essential key to success in the proposal industry. Our team uses a farming grid for complex projects which helps us not only with our own assignments, but each other’s in the event someone on our team is out unexpectedly.
Why/when did you join APMP? I joined APMP to be able to network with peers and learn more about our industry and best practices. I hope to earn my first designation this year and I am excited to attend my first APMP Bid and Proposal Con in June.
What is your method for successfully working with your proposal teams? My method for successfully working with our proposal teams is keeping communication going. I keep in contact with my key SME’s. They know they can come to me if they need anything and I know that they will be there for me if I need a quick turn-around on responses or any last minute clarifications.
Which type of proposals do you do most? Commercial, government or other? I mostly work on Commercial proposals.
