Questions Carleen's Answers
How long have you been a proposal manager/specialist/ writer? 20 years’ experience across the proposal management continuum including roles such as coordinator, writer, specialist, manager, business development/ capture management director, proposal director and VP of proposal development.
How did you become involved with proposals? Immediately after undergraduate, my first job with Lucent Technologies provided an entry way into international proposal management working on large, complex telecommunication proposals.
Do you work in a "corporate office" or "home office" environment? I currently work in a corporate office
What do you like best about working in your current environment? The most rewarding part of my job is my team.
What do you like least? My least favorite task is workload volume with limited forecast of the overall pipeline
What do you feel is the most challenging aspect of your job? Same as above. Workload is the most challenging as there is limited ability to forecast surges or downtime.
What shortcuts or helpful best practices about working with proposal teams could you share? 1. Leverage repository of baseline and liked industry content for quick turn responses; 2. Low cost document management system such as SharePoint enables co-authoring - multiple deal team members working in the same document enabling an efficient process and limiting administrative work on the back end; 3. Project-specific style guides enabling consistency across all deal team members and reviewers.
Why/when did you join APMP? I joined APMP to develop my skills as a proposal professional and also to serve as an example for my team as they hone their skills as a proposal professional
What is your method for successfully working with your proposal teams? There are a myriad of successful methods but the most effective is team work, dedication and commitment. The old adage states that it takes a village to... and this saying is synonymous with proposals as it takes a village to do what we do daily. Having standardized processes also enable a consistent work product and team experience. My proposal team have a standard operating process wherein all work in the same manner enabling a consistent work product and user experience.
Which type of proposals do you do most? Commercial, government or other? The financial services industry completes both forms of proposal transactions - Commercial and government proposals.
