|How long have you been a proposal manager/specialist/ writer?||Ten years with gaps in between.|
|How did you become involved with proposals?||I was involved with proposals in some form or fashion for some 30 years in various capacities, as Mgr of Manufacturing Engineering, Program Manager, Business Development Tiger Team and Business Unit Director. In 2002 I was hired by FATS Inc. now called Meggitt, as a Proposal Manager to bring about a major UK MoD opportunity which we won. Subsequent contracts were won then I left to start my own business – totally unrelated. I was then recruited once again by Meggitt to take on a Commercial Management role responsible for International contracts which I did, and which now has developed into new role as Director of Proposals responsible for all proposals submitted by the company.|
|Do you work in a "corporate office" or "home office" environment?||I work in a corporate office in Atlanta Georgia and I have the ability to work from home.|
|What do you like best about working in your current environment?||Personally, I can work either way, in solitary at home or in an office environment. At home I get more done and work longer hours. However, to answer the question; the environment provided by my company is very conducive to being able to produce effective proposals with other team members in a pleasant office\facility atmosphere.|
|What do you like least?||Broccoli maybe. What do I like least about preparing proposals? Waiting. Waiting on all inputs needed from the various disciplines and coordinating last minute panic edits which you tried to prevent in the first place.|
|What do you feel is the most challenging aspect of your job?||As the Director of Proposals department, one of the challenging aspects is to ensure that all proposals meet the due dates and that the work load is evenly distributed amongst the team since we have an average of 80 quote\proposals per month to complete @ values from $K to $M. Included in this count are international proposals and it is imperative that all proposals are correct.|
|What shortcuts or helpful best practices about working with proposal teams could you share?||Not sure. Each company has its own quirk for managing proposals from who is in charge, to how it gets produced and approved. When working with a team its imperative that there is a leader and a path to follow or time is wasted and proposals need all the time it can get.|
|Why/when did you join APMP?||To broaden my horizon and associates. If I am going to be in this job for a while, it seems practical that I join this type of organization. Next year, if all goes well I hope to include my staff. I have been aware of this organization for a long time and its benefits to proposal management, but your logo|
|What is your method for successfully working with your proposal teams?||The team in this instance is my staff. To allow them to have autonomy over the finished product while I provide guidance. But there again, this is what I try to do and they may have a totally different opinion!|
|Which type of proposals do you do most? Commercial, government or other?||Approximately 60% is Military and the balance is commercial Law Enforcement.|
