Weston Solutions, Inc.
How long have you been a proposal manager/specialist/ writer?
As of October 2015, I have nearly 2 years of direct Proposal Coordination/Proposal Support experience. However, I have participated in proposal preparation and development activities sporadically throughout my environmental consulting/environmental scientist career, which spans over 20 years.
How did you become involved with proposals?
Initially through supporting proposal activities to bid for environmental contracts that would benefit the technical teams I worked with as an Envrionmental Science. I then accepted a less technical role primarily supporting proposal development in order to return to Weston Solutions after an 8-year period of working for other firms or independently.
Do you work in a "corporate office" or "home office" environment?
I work in both environments. I telecommute two days a week or more.
What do you like best about working in your current environment?
I really enjoy the ability to use both my creative and technical skills. Proposals are a mix of art and science and I really like that. I also really enjoy and appreciate the flexibility I have in my current working environment.
What do you like least about working in your current environment?
What do you feel is the most challenging aspect of your job?
Getting Project Managers and Technical Support Personnel to consistently create project summaries/descriptions and to update their corporate bios/resumes.
What shortcuts or helpful best practices about working with proposal teams could you share?
At Weston, we strive to maintain consistent proposal teams for similar contracts and Task Order bids. We share lessons learned and resources with the entire Proposal Development Group through a dedicated web portal.
Why/when did you join APMP?
To expand my knowledge and skills related to capture planning, business development, and marketing.
What is your method for successfully working with your proposal teams?
Courtesy, respect, and understanding the time constraints and other competing responsibilities of the various members on the proposal proposal teams? team. Communication and responsiveness are also key ingredients.
Which type of proposals do you do most? Commercial, government or other?
Weston Solutions pursues both commercial and government contracts. I work on a variety of local, state, and federal government proposals and commercial proposals; however, I probably work on more Federal proposals.
